Sanabel’s 2017 Awards

We are delighted to announce the launch of Sanabel’s 2017 Awards which the excellence award is dedicated to “Good Governance” and the general award is dedicated to “Serving the Youth”.

One of the important factors that lead to sustainability of microfinance sector and institutions is the good governance of MFIs which fulfill the institutional mission, monitor the performance of the institution, make good strategic decisions, ensure accountability, manage risks effectively and maintain a healthy environment in the institution. However, good governance is considered to be an obstacle facing the sector and many MFIs in the Arab countries due to various circumstances; therefore, we need to present an example of good governance in order to overcome such an obstacle.

Award Criteria:

  • How is the organization governed?
  • What is the role of the board and board committees?
  • What does the board approve?
  • Obligations and responsibility of board members
  • Degree of control that the board exercise
  • The current mandate / bylaw
  • The selection and recruitment process for board of directors
  • Profile of board members
  • Structure of board
  • Board Committees, meetings and attendance
  • Accountability, integrity, values, leadership, transferability (knowledge) and transparency
  • Strategy and framework of the board
  • Approaches to performance & risk management, transparency
  • Code of conduct

In the Arab countries, the population of youth is increasing along with an increase in the youth unemployment which leads to many negative consequences. Financial services for the youth improve their capabilities in order to match them with the available jobs or start up business where they can generate income from and help in the development of the next generation. Effective youth financial services are different from the financial services offered to other market segments due to their particular needs. Therefore, there is a high need to demonstrate how MFIs could serve youth effectively.

Award Criteria:

  • Describe the process of R & D for youth products and services
  • Number of active clients:

-  Youth

-  Young women

  • Gross loan portfolio

-  Youth (as a % of total gross loan portfolio)

  • Number of young employees
  • How do you reach out to youth?
  • How do you support young people to start up business?

If you wish to apply for Sanabel Award- Serving Youth, please fill out the application form and send it to by Monday, July 31, 2017


  • The applicant has to be Sanabel member.
  • The applicant updated their profiles and financial date on the Mix market.
  • The applicant has been operating at least for five years.
  • The applicant adheres to Sanabel membership criteria.


The winners will receive the Sanabel 2017 Awards and they will have 5 minutes to present their experience with the audience at the award session during the closing ceremony at the conference.


Interviews will be conducted with the winners during the conference and they will be available on Sanabel website.
